Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay discovered her love for art through the aunt Denise. DuVernay worked as an evening nurse in order to give her aunt to have the space she required during the day for the love of art, literature, and theatre. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay saw how art was an effective tool for promoting social activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother who had a social conscience and encouraged DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. Although DuVernay was raised in Compton with her family she was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. DuVernay's father remembered watching the historic Civil Rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer months and was motivated to make a documentary about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she received qualifications in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism as a student. She began working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the monitor and investigate the residence of a particular member of the Jury. Her tasks left her disappointed with journalism so she decided to move towards the publicity industry. DuVernay started her career as a junior publicity assistant for a film studio that was small, right after graduating from college. The DuVernay Agency is her first agency for public relations.
